The Death of the Laser Barcode Scanner
Before CCD and 2D scanners all we had was laser which has
been with us for around 50 years and in that time has served us well. Now, the
major manufacturers are no longer making laser barcode scanners and they have
been superseded by the CCD.
Technology has improved dramatically, and the read speed and
quality of CCD scanners is now much better than laser. The CCD also has
additional benefits, it can also read linear barcodes on a phone.
Omnidirectional laser scanners used in on-counter and in
counter scanner scales have been replaced by 2D scanners.
This technology again is much faster than the laser, with
the added benefit of reading both linear and 2D barcodes on phones.
There is a wide range of CCD and 2D scan engines available which
will read the smallest barcodes on surgical instruments to the highest pallet in
the racking.
In many businesses such as retail, warehousing and logistics
2D scanners are the first choice and have the added benefit of not requiring
the aiming line to be horizontally through the barcode.
The humble barcode is still king in retail and warehousing
it is extremely cheap to produce and will have a place in business for many
more years.
